One goes near your router, the other goes in the part of your home that's been struggling to connect to the wi-fi. Available in pairs, these devices work by using your home’s existing electrical wiring to transmit data. Powerline adaptors (also known as a HomePlug) are ideal for extending coverage to areas of your home where even wi-fi repeaters struggle to reach. They act as a relay to rebroadcast the wireless signal from your router to other devices in your home.Īlternatively, you can invest in a powerline adaptor. The simplest and most affordable solution is called a wireless extender or repeater. Positioned correctly, a wi-fi extender will boost you router’s wireless signal, and a stronger signal means it will carry further throughout your home. If your router is struggling to broadcast wi-fi to the far corners of your home, a wi-fi extender may be the answer. To see the best routers we recommend, see our comprehensive wireless router reviews. These tend to be better suited to the technically confident, those who are happy to delve into settings and customise their networks. If the customer service agent you're speaking to explains that you'll need to enter into a new 12-month or 18-month contract in order to get the router, be sure this is something you're comfortable with.Īlternatively, you could give up on ISP routers altogether, and invest in a high quality third-party router. One caveat: watch out for contract extensions. Additionally, you could also look at a third-party router, which can bring extra features and functionality that may not be available from a router supplied by the provider. As a long-term customer, you may be able to phone your broadband provider for a free router upgrade. If that’s the case, it’s worth considering a new router. This means your router won’t deliver the faster wireless speeds and wider coverage that the newer wireless AC standard brings. For example, if you’ve recently bought a new laptop, it probably supports the newer wireless AC standard, while your router may only support the older wireless N standard. Older routers, supplied by your broadband provider, may not have the wireless strength or range of newer models. Technology moves on, and if you've been a customer with an internet service provider (ISP) for a long time, then newer customers may be getting better routers than the one you're stuck using. If you're consistently getting bad broadband speeds, or if you keep hitting connection problems, then an old or faulty router could be to blame. See our additional advice for boosting your home wi-fi signal. Generally, you need to connect to your router's address (printed in the manual, or on the label on the side/bottom of the router) and use the administrator login (also on the router label) to change these settings. To access these settings on your router, it’s different for every model, so check the router's manual to identify the specific steps you'll need to take. To ensure you receive the strongest wi-fi signal, we recommend using channels 1, 6 or 12, as they have no frequency overlap with each other. Even other wireless signals from nearby neighbours can impact performance on your wireless network.Īlthough your router transmits on a frequency band, such as 2.4GHz, it actually only uses a small slice of the frequency, called a channel. While you may be tempted to hide ugly-looking routers out of sight, it needs to be free of any obstructions.īe aware that a lot of things can impact the strength of the wireless signal: walls, doors, microwaves and cordless phones all have an effect. You’ll get the best wi-fi coverage in your home if you’re able to place your router somewhere central in your home, out in the open. Get the most from your existing routerīefore shelling out for a replacement router or other equipment, see what you can do to improve your existing one. If you're willing to spend, then we explain the various types of equipment you can buy for boosting your wi-fi to carry the signal throughout your home.įind more solutions to common broadband problems with our guide on how to fix bad broadband. You can make simple adjustments to your existing kit. Webpages will load quickly whether you're upstairs or downstairs, and YouTube and Netflix videos will stream smoothly even if you're watching in bed, far away from your main wi-fi router.īut, before you spend hard-earned cash on a new router or an expensive wi-fi system, it might be worth considering other options to rectify weak wi-fi coverage. But, a good wi-fi connection doesn’t have to be elusive.Ī better home wi-fi network means you can access the web throughout your home. Wireless black spots or dropouts can be caused by many different factors, such as your home’s infrastructure causing interference, a faulty router, or even just thick walls. It’s frustrating when your home wi-fi drops, with connectivity coming and going on a whim. Sprinkle a little flour on top, and then bring the dough together with your hands. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.ĥTransfer the dough onto a lightly floured work surface. Make a well in the middle, and then pour in the milk (or buttermilk). Pulse 5 to 7 times or until the butter turns into tiny bits - see our photos and video for reference.ĤEmpty the butter-flour mixture into a large bowl. Pulse three to four times so that it is mixed.ģCut the cold butter into cubes or thin slices, then scatter it over the flour in the food processor. I love the slightly more salty flavor when salted butter is used in our recipe, but you can always hold back on some of the salt called for in the recipe if you aren’t looking for more savory/salty biscuits.ġHeat the oven to 425° Fahrenheit and set aside an oven-safe 10-inch or 12-inch skillet like a cast iron pan or, if you do not have one, set aside a baking sheet instead.ĢCombine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt in the bowl of a food processor. Now, if you don’t have European salted butter on hand, plain butter works (salted or unsalted). In this recipe, though, I love reaching for European salted butter, like Kerrygold or Plugra, since they make the biscuits tender and delicious. What type of butter is best for making biscuits? Most often, in our baking recipes, we call for unsalted butter. Thanks to the extra baking powder, the biscuits are light and fluffy no matter what flour you use. I should note, though, that with this biscuit recipe, all-purpose flour is perfectly adequate. These are all excellent options for biscuits since their lower protein content shuts down gluten formation, which means they will be light, fluffy, and tender. However, some stores sell soft white wheat flour (lower protein), like White Lilly, Martha White, and Bob’s Red Mill Fine Pastry Flour. What type of flour is best for making biscuits? We use all-purpose flour since that’s what is available where we live. If any of that seems confusing, please watch our video. If the dough needs it, we will do it for a third time before pressing it into a final rectangle and cutting out our biscuits. Then we rotate the new rectangle, press it out, and do it again. You can see us work the dough in our video.įirst, we push the dough into a rough rectangle and then fold the sides into the middle, like a letter. Instead, we press the dough with our fingers. We don’t use a rolling pin when preparing the biscuits. When the butter and flour are dealt with, we mix in the milk and then form the dough. Tip: If your butter starts to warm up, place the bowl with flour and butter into the fridge for 5 to 10 minutes. If you don’t feel like getting your food processor out, you can use your hands or a pastry cutter to work the butter into the flour - we do this when making our easy Drop Biscuits and these Cheese Biscuits. When cutting the butter into the flour, you want to be as fast as possible so that the butter does not warm up. We use it to make our favorite All-Butter Pie Crust for the same reason. It’s an excellent tool for cutting the cold butter into our flour mixture since it’s quick. My preferred method is to get out my food processor. The dough for scones is similar to biscuits! How to Make Biscuits More: If you love biscuits, please take a look at these Cranberry Scones or these Blackberry Lemon Scones. The extra baking powder in this biscuit recipe is a game-changer for making the fluffiest and most tender homemade biscuits. I know that seems like a lot of baking powder, but trust me. So, if self-rising flour is all you have, use it, but whisk in 2 extra teaspoons of baking powder. If you use self-rising flour, there won’t be enough baking powder added to the biscuit dough. In this case, though, we add more baking powder than usual. There’s nothing wrong with it, and when you use the right recipe, it cuts down on adding extra ingredients. Self-rising flour is pre-mixed flour, baking powder, and salt. It also helps to make the crumb light, airy, and tender.įor these particular biscuits, we choose to mix baking powder and flour ourselves instead of buying self-rising flour. The butter makes these biscuits taste incredible. In this homestyle biscuit recipe, we cut very cold butter into all-purpose flour, salt, and baking powder. TeamViewer immediately responded to fix the issue to bring all services back up”. The outage was caused by a denial-of-service (DoS) attack aimed at the TeamViewer DNS-Server infrastructure. “TeamViewer experienced a service outage on June 1. It was not until June 1st that TeamViewer issued an updated statement to address the outage and unauthorized connections. TeamViewer additionally pointed out that : "neither was TeamViewer was hacked nor is there a security hole, TeamViewer is safe to use and has proper security measures in place, our evidence points to careless use as the cause of the reported issue, a few extra steps will prevent potential abuse." However, the company still did not address the recent reports of unauthorized access and merely mirrored the May 23 statement. However, even users with strong passwords and two-factor authentication complained that their TeamViewer accounts were hit. “TeamViewer is appalled by any criminal activity however, the source of the problem, according to our research, is careless use, not a potential security breach on TeamViewer’s side,” TeamViewer said in a May 23 statement. Given the recent LinkedIn, Tumblr, and MySpace security breaches where millions of email and password combos were hacked due to the re-use of login credentials across various sites and services, TeamViewer claims that it wasn’t hacked directly and that the breach likely stemmed from the reuse of these compromised passwords. TeamViewer initially claimed that there were no problems with their system, but rather the users’ individual credentials. This happened around the time the company suffered possible DNS issues that caused an outage that lasted a couple of hours. According to several users, unauthorized access reports started showing up on Reddit over the last few days that resulted in raided PayPal, eBay, and Amazon accounts via stolen credentials stored in the browser. TeamViewer, the popular remote desktop connection software that allows people to share screens and remote access, was reportedly hacked by unknown third parties. Can you elaborate on how it works and how the studio leveraged it? Most of the things that move were exported and then heavily optimized with Quest specifications in mind, but we kept a large part of the static assets.ĭrifter Entertainment has noted that multiview allowed the studio to squeeze out as much performance out of the Quest’s GPU as possible. Tonks: We reused assets wherever possible, both to cut down on production costs as well as staying true to the original game. Was Drifter Entertainment able to re-use any existing assets or did the studio have to recreate many of them? Tonks: Once we gave the physics engine its own little corner of the CPU and fixed a handful of minor bugs caused by the move to Android, things mostly “just worked.” Although, there was some effort required to simplify the physical complexity of things in the game to relieve some of the physics burden as well. Was it a challenge implementing the game’s physics? With lots of toys like slow-motion bullets and throwable weapons, Robo Recall features a lot of physics. The last piece of the puzzle was tuning the engine to utilize every last scrap of the CPU and GPU that we could. So, initially there was a lot of "this thing had 40 components, but we can achieve the same result with three.” I think the effort was equal parts good-old-fashioned optimization of assets, and trimming all the fat off the implementations of all the various gameplay systems. When you’re making a game for PC, you don’t necessarily have to worry about how the buildings in your level are composed, or how many bits and pieces are on all your characters. For the most part, we immediately knew what was going to run on Quest and what needed to be trimmed, re-thought, or remade. There is some advantage to knowing ahead of time what the exact capabilities of the device you’re shipping on are. Tonks: The short answer is: lots of elbow grease. Fortunately, our obsession with keeping gameplay identical paid off, and we didn’t have to make any cuts.Ĭonsidering that Robo Recall initially launched on the Oculus Rift, which required a relatively beefy gaming PC, how did the studio manage to get the game working on the Quest’s more modest mobile processor? Originally, we were worried we might have to curtail some of this stuff to make things run at a consistent frame rate. The number of enemies is the same, weapons work the same way, and all the awesome physics-based animation features of the original are still there. We bent over backwards to make sure nothing we did would change the feel (or scoring potential) of the original game. I’m here to tell you that is not the case. I think when people first heard the game was coming to Quest, they would assume there would be less enemies, less physics, less mayhem, less everything. Tonks: We are proud to say the gameplay is virtually identical. Luckily, Drifter has strong ties to Epic and decades of collective experience using (and working on) Unreal Engine, which made us the perfect partner to help pave the way and show what is possible on Quest with Unreal Engine.įrom a gameplay perspective, how similar is the Quest version of Robo Recall to the Rift version that was shipped by Epic? As you might imagine, I think they were a little shy about letting just anyone work on the port. Technical Director Matt Tonks: With Quest’s focus being Rift-style gaming, getting Robo Recall on Quest was obviously something Oculus were very keen on seeing happen.Robo Recall is Epic’s game. In our discussion, the Drifter Entertainment dev outlines challenges the team had to overcome, elaborates on what optimizations netted the biggest performance gains, and shares Quest development tips.Ĭan you shed some light on how Drifter Entertainment has taken the lead on developing Robo Recall for the Oculus Quest? To shed some light on how the studio was able to accomplish this, we interviewed Technical Director Matt Tonks. What’s even more impressive is that Drifter Entertainment was able to bring all of this over with just seven people in six months. This means the game still features the same amount of enemies, physics, and spatial audio as the original title. Fortunately, the indie studio's work paid off with Virtual Reality Oasis calling the Quest version, renamed Robo Recall: Unplugged, " a blast!"ĭespite more modest system specs, Robo Recall: Unplugged plays identically to its Rift counterpart. On paper, this would be a challenging endeavor, considering the completely wireless VR headset is powered by a mobile processor and not a high-end gaming PC. Roughly two years later, Drifter Entertainment has been tasked with porting the game to the Oculus Quest. By Jimmy Thang When Epic released Robo Recall for the Oculus Rift in 2017, the game was designed to take advantage of powerful gaming PCs. |
